GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY

Donated by Griffith J Griffith as long as it was operated for the public with no admission charge, Griffith Observatory has now welcomed tens of millions of visitors. 

DON’T MISS:

PLAN YOUR VISIT:

• Admission is free to grounds, observatory building and telescopes.
• Planetarium tickets are $7 for 13 years old and over, $3 for children 5-12 and free for under 5s (though they must sit on an adults lap and are only admitted to the first show each day). Students with ID and seniors cost $5.
• Parking is limited near the observatory and costs $6-$10 per hour.

THE QUEEN MARY

Before you join your modern cruise ship, visit a ship that was the epitome of luxury for over three decades as it plied the Atlantic. A former Blue Riband holder for the fastest Atlantic crossing, the ship, she also served as a troop carrier in World War II before returning to passenger service. 

DON’T MISS:

HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME

Continuously added to with new stars added regularly, the walk of fame now stretches for many blocks and off down side streets too.

If you want to see a certain star, check its location on the official website, or just wander and see which names you recognise, but do check you are the at the right star for Harrison Ford and Michael Jackson, there are two stars with each of those names, for different people.

DON’T MISS:

• Muhammad Ali’s star which is on the wall of the Dolby Theater.
• Find all five of Gene Autry’s stars, the only person with a star in every category.

CALIFORNIA SCIENCE CENTER

An excellent science museum in its own right, but also the proud home of the one NASA’s Space Shuttles, Endeavour. The shuttle’s name includes a ‘U’  because it is named after the British ship HMS Endeavour and carried an original piece of wood from James Cook’s ship in its cockpit.

DON’T MISS:

• Visiting the Space Shuttle Endeavour.
• Watching a 3D IMAX film.
• Checking out the many permanent exhibits.

WARNER BROS. STUDIO TOUR

If you want to glimpse behind the silver screen, then a tour of a film studio lets you do just that. The Warner Bros. tour takes you around the backlot and your guide will point out places which have appeared in some of your favourite shows. You’ll then go on to a sound stage, through workshops and to displays from some of Warner Bros. best-loved classics.

• Seeing behind the scenes of sets from your favourite shows.
• The exhibitions of Harry Potter and Batman.
• Sitting on the sofa in Central Perk
• Learning some of the tricks of the movie industry.

BATTLESHIP USS IOWA MUSEUM

The last of its kind, Battleship Iowa was the lead ship of the final class of battleships built for the US Navy. Seeing action in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans during World War II and during the Korean War, the ship served the US Navy for several decades.

DON’T MISS:

• Exploring a real-life battleship.
• The FDR cabin where presidents stayed on board.
• Learn about the ship’s history in WWII, Korea and the Cold War.
• Take a special tour to see the engine rooms or gun turrets.

THE GETTY VILLA

Based on villa dei Papiri, Getty Villa is a reconstruction of a 1st-century Roman Villa, complete with Outer and Inner Peristyle Gardens. The museum has thousands of Greek, Roman and artefacts on display in a location that mimics a place they could have been originally situated.

THE MUSEUM OF JURASSIC TECHNOLOGY

For a more eclectic museum, the Museum of Jurassic Technology, despite its name, is not all about dinosaurs. With obscure exhibits such as miniatures scenes, string figures and rotting dice from a magician, there is sure to be something to intrigue you.

DON’T MISS:

• Microminiatures of Hagop Sandaldjian.
• Micromosaics made from butterfly wing scales.
• The many other eclectic collections to discover.
• Tea in the Tila Tea Room, modelled after the Tsar Nicolas II study in the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg.
